Key facts

A grassland plant with (usually) spikes of blue - actually the sepals rather than the flowers - on spreading stems

Flowers come in a variety of colours: dark blue is most common, but can also be mauve, pink or white

Grows up to 10 cm high, with alternating pointed leaves


Once believed to increase the milk of nursing mothers
