A smaller version of the snipe, a few being seen in Essex on migration or over winter in most years
Breeds in northern Europe
Likes the same wetland habitats as snipe, that is soft ground with plenty of vegetation to provide cover
Recognition
Dark streaked upperparts like the snipe, but has two distinct yellow stripes and a shorter bill and tail; 17–19 cm
When approached, sits tight until the intruder is very close, then rockets up and quickly down again into cover
