Damselflies

All damselflies are small and slender with a fluttering flight. At rest, most hold their wings closed over the top of their body.

The most striking and the largest of the damselflies found in Essex is the banded demoiselle, found near flowing water.

The emerald damselfly and the rarer scarce emerald damselfly are found around shallow standing water with dense vegetation, such as on marshland.

The large red damselfly and the azure damselfly are widespread and common, but sensitive to pollution.

The common blue damselfly and the blue-tailed damselfly are among the commonest in Britain, likely to be found in any suitable garden pond.
