A shrub with yellow flowers in summer, looking like a miniature broom and growing in open woods and scrubby areas

Yellow pea-like flowers cluster near the top of the plant throughout summer, followed by short seed pods

Produces a yellow dye that combines with blue dye from woad to make a green, hence its name
